I love this topic, and have considered writing about it, but the author of rageagainsttheminivan.com (I don't know her personally, but wish I did) covered the topic beautifully, so I won't bother.
This woman's experience is, in many ways, similar to mine. I trained for and ran a half-marathon after my second daughter was born thinking it would melt the baby weight right off of me. It didn't. But I was in great shape.
