Community Serve Day

I don't know if I have said this before on this blog, but it is about time...

I AM A BIG FAN OF MY CHURCH.

One reason I think our church is great is because of Community Serve Day.  Community Serve Day is the day church is cancelled. Well, kind of.  Our Sunday services are indeed cancelled, and the seats in the sanctuary are empty, but the seats are empty so that the people who normally fill them (plus friends, family, and neighbors) can go out into the community to serve.

This year 1,300 people signed up to serve at over 40 sites throughout San Diego County. The sites ranged from packing boxes for troops, to preparing welcome kits for San Diego Rescue Mission, to gardening and painting projects at local schools and care facilities, to beach clean-ups, to lemonade stands that raised money for childhood cancer research.

Chris and I got to lead a site this year called The Flower Connection. It was a family-friendly site where we painted and decorated clay pots, planted succulents in the beautified pots, and delivered the plants to people who were either homebound, or live in assisted living communities.

It was a lot of work, a lot of fun, and we got to do it with 20 amazing people (some we knew before, some we know now). We will be signing up to lead this site again next year, largely because we learned so much that we could have done better.

Not only is Community Serve Day a great idea for all churches, it is a great idea for groups of friends, or families...any day of the year...or two, or three.

Here is a glimpse of our day.
